La Esquina exudes authenticity, granted my only reference is limited to my one Mexican friend Hector; however, this feels real and the ingredients have an identity. So often “Mexican food” is just multiple takes on a bean and rice mash-up. At La Esquina you can see each elements value, its color, and its purpose.
Aguacate con queso: avocado, queso fresco, black beans, pico de gallo, and salsa verde. Boom!
The cochinita pibil was fantastic. Habanero pickled onions, and jalapeños make this pork taco fairly spicy; however, the shredded cabbage tames the heat well.
Thought I should show the aftermath. Gotta make it to La Esquina, 114 Kenmare Street
New York, New York 10012. Also, there is a secret “speakeasy” salon underground if you’re feeling brave.
